As graduation day approaches, twin seniors Isabella and Bernardo Bernabe are preparing to walk the stage as proud members of John F. Kennedy High School’s Class of 2025. But their journey hasn’t just been about academics — it’s been about strength, perseverance, and a shared passion for powerlifting that has taken them all the way to the state level.
“I started powerlifting as a sophomore,” says Bernardo. “I saw the older guys doing it and wanted to be like them. I wanted to be strong.”
Three years later, Bernardo has turned that initial spark into serious success. After countless hours in JFK’s weight room and consistent dedication, he placed second in the state, a major milestone in his athletic journey.
“My first meet was a small invitational. I got first place, and it really inspired me to work harder,” the 17-year-old recalls.
His determination didn’t go unnoticed. Twin sister Isabella soon followed suit.
“I started competing my sophomore year too, but my first meet didn’t go so well,” she says with a laugh. “I was so nervous. But once it was over, I realized I could do this.”
With support from each other, their coaches, and their teammates, the Bernabe twins grew stronger each season. Isabella qualified for Regionals all three years and this year, she pushed herself to the limit, earning a trip to State, where she proudly finished eighth in Texas.
“It makes me feel good about myself,” Isabella says. “Powerlifting pushes you to your limits. It’s all about how far you’re willing to go.”
The siblings agree that powerlifting has taught them more than just technique, it’s instilled confidence, discipline, and resilience.
“At the end of the day, it’s about what you can do,” Bernardo reflects. “I gave it my best, got my best score, and I’m proud of that.”
Now preparing for life beyond JFK, both Isabella and Bernardo hope to inspire future students to join the powerlifting program and discover their own potential.
“Start early and stick with it,” Isabella advises. “You’ll be amazed by how far you can go.”
From the weight room to the graduation stage, Isabella and Bernardo Bernabe have shown what it means to be Rocket Strong — lifting themselves, and each other, to new heights.
