The John F. Kennedy High School Rockets volleyball team showed resilience and determination Tuesday night, battling back from an early deficit to defeat the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs in an exciting five-set match.
After dropping the first two sets, the Rockets refused to back down. Kennedy responded with three consecutive wins to complete the comeback and secure a 3-2 victory. The win marks the Rockets' second straight victory and improves the team's season record to 5-4. Head Coach Vanessa Nunez praised the way her players stayed together and competed through adversity.
“I’m really proud of them,” says Nunez. “We need to continue improving, but they didn’t give up and they fought for each other.”
The Rockets demonstrated poise under pressure, making key plays throughout the final three sets to shift momentum and close out the match. Their strong finish showcased a team learning how to respond when faced with challenges.
“We talk a lot about having the resilience to bounce back quickly, that every player has a role, every player is important and we must have each other’s backs. Last night they showed that growth and demonstrated the kind of team we want to be,” says Nunez.
With growing confidence and back-to-back wins under their belt, Kennedy now turns its attention to tournament play. The Rockets head to Pearsall for a three-day tournament, starting Thursday.
